The Joe Gans 150th Celebration commemorates the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Joe Gans, the first African American world champion in the sport of boxing and Baltimore’s native son. From November 2024 to November 2025, this year-long celebration honors his historic achievements and profound impact on Baltimore. Through a diverse array of events including educational programs, community activities, sporting events, preservation initiatives, and more, Baltimore City will pay tribute to Gans's journey and explore the rich cultural heritage of this great city.

Colleen Aycock, Ph.D.
Co-Editor for the International Boxing Research Organization and member of the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame. She has authored and co-edited 5 books on boxing and numerous articles in sports magazines and journals. Aycock is the co-author of Joe Gans: A Biography of the First African American World Boxing Champion (2008).
