About the event

Honoring the Old Master: A Walk Through History at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, is an immersive public event that invites visitors to step back in time and explore the rich history of Baltimore’s oldest Black cemetery. Through storytelling, period reenactments, and community engagement, this event brings history to life to honor the remarkable individuals and families laid to rest at Mt. Auburn Cemetery—including the legendary Joe Gans.


Participants will embark on a self-guided historical walk, encountering storytellers in period costume who will share the legacies of Baltimore’s early Black pioneers, activists, business leaders, and athletes. Visitors will also gain insight into Mt. Auburn’s origins, its significance to Baltimore’s African American community, and ways to support its preservation.


This event is free and open to the public, welcoming history enthusiasts, community members, students, preservationists, and boxing fans eager to discover the powerful stories of those who helped shape Baltimore’s story.
